Was listening to random 80s tracks today on Spotify (child of '82 here) and this started playing and I thought, wow, I know this song, but it sounds like an intro to a TV program. A quick Google reveals that it was used by a show called It'll never Work on CBBC in the 90s. Seems I was too young for the song to catch the song when it came out but accidentally listened to it second time around in the 90s.

Martin Gore's part is the best in this song, imo.

First time watching the video, always hated the song. It's pandering with it's logic. "Can't understand what makes a man hate another man. Help me understand." -- It always seemed to me he answered his own question. You can't understand, that's where the hate comes from. You can't understand.

Context:Martin Gore and David Gahan are both mixed-race, with non-white fathers. Gore's father was African-American, while Gahan's father was Indian-Malaysian. And yet Gore and Gahan both looked more like their white mothers. Similarly, Freddie Mercury was of Indian-Persian heritage, yet was "white-passing". Gore, Gahan and Mercury didn't talk about their heritage back then, as there was a lot of discrimination against ethnic minorities in the '80s, at a time when "Paki-bashing" was widespread and when the British far-right (National Front and BNP) were at the height of their influence. So "People are People" is referencing how mixed-race people like Gore and Gahan, and especially their immigrant fathers, were hated and made to feel like "outsiders" in British society during the '70s to '80s.
